About the Exhibitor
SanSuiDo is a maker of Kamakurabori—lacquerware created by carving patterns into wooden surfaces by hand and applying layers of lacquer over and over. Originating from Buddhist sculpture in the Kamakura period, Kamakurabori is distinct from the ornate lacquerware of Kyoto for its solid, quiet strength and simple dignity. The subtle shadows of the carving and the deep lustre of the lacquer embody the aesthetic of the samurai and the spirit of Zen, bringing timeless beauty into everyday life.
Guided by the concept of “Art for Everyday Use,” Sansuido creates Kamakurabori that balances refined craftsmanship with practical functionality. Each piece is designed to feel comfortable in the hand, its lacquer gaining depth and character as it is used over time. By blending traditional techniques with modern sensibilities, we aim to bring a sense of richness and quiet joy into daily living.
Founded in 1980, SanSuiDo has maintained its workshop and storefront in Kamakura, consistently handling every step from production to direct sales. Since exhibiting at the Frankfurt International Trade Fair in 2018, the company has participated in international events such as the Japan Expo in Paris, the Japan Products Exhibition in Dalian, and Made in Japan in Monaco. From 2020 to March 2024, its works were also available at Maison WA, a Japanese product boutique in Paris, sharing the spirit of Kamakura craftsmanship with the world.
About the Products
8-inch Plum-shaped Plate with Sword Marks (SK8006)
Shaped like a plum blossom, this small plate is thin and lightweight, yet it is reinforced with multiple layers of lacquer applied from the base, allowing it to withstand years of use. The water-resistant lacquer allows it to be washed with water. Perfect for serving small hors d’oeuvres such as cheese or prosciutto, this piece was also selected as a trending product at the Ambiente 2018 Frankfurt International Trade Fair.
Thick Plate with Chisel Marks (SA8001)
This thick plate features bold textural marks created with a hammering chisel, giving it a strong, sculptural presence. Finished with a water-resistant lacquer coating, it can be washed with water and is perfect for serving New Year’s dishes, entertaining guests, or presenting small hors d’oeuvres.
Both pieces were selected as trending products at the Ambiente 2018 Frankfurt International Trade Fair.
