Connecting Ceramics is a film showcasing the experience of Dutch Artists and Japanese Ceramists when working together in Arita, Saga Prefecture. Arita is the home of porcelain craft in Japan and for centuries there has been a strong connection with The Netherlands. This film gives you an inspiring insight into the Creative Residency Arita in Saga, on art, cultural exchange and ceramics.

Connecting Ceramics is developed with Saga Prefectural Government Japan and Creative Residency Arita (CRA).

On Saturday 16 September between 17:30-18:00, the artist Dirk van Lieshout will talk about his experience at the CRA this year ahead of the screening.

Director

Jerry de Mars
After his education as a cultural anthropologist, Jerry studied directing in Prague and started making films. He produced several documentaries and short films and often works on commissioned films for the United Nations. Jerry's passion for Japan grew when he was invited by Artists Shinji Otani and Johan Nieuwenhuize to document their work in Kyushu Japan. Currently, Jerry is setting up the Chiyohisa Foundation in Ukiha Japan, this is a residency program focussing on craft, art and its role in the sustainable connection to nature.

Dirk van Lieshout
Dirk van Lieshout (Deurne, The Netherlands) is a multidisciplinary artist. His work is invariably strongly tied to the context of a place (site-specific) and notions such as play, movement and performance are characteristic of his work. For the past five years he has lived and worked in many countries including Japan. In June 2023 he started to stay at the CRA to investigate Japanese tea culture and tradition and connect it with porcelain and performance.
